Gun magazine found at Choctaw High School

According to Choctaw Police, Choctaw High School was placed on lockdown Monday after a gun magazine was found on school grounds.

The police say they are conducting an investigation.

According to an email to parents, Choctaw-Nicoma Park Schools Superintendent David Reid said a magazine was found on the Choctaw High School campus Monday morning. A student reported it to Choctaw-Nicoma Park officials, who then searched for and found the magazine.

The email said no weapon was found associated with the magazine and no threats were made. The principal added that “out of an abundance of caution, CHS has placed the entire campus on lockdown.”

The statement also said that the magazine probably belonged to a small-caliber weapon.

The superintendent stated that CNP officers, along with Choctaw police, have begun an investigation. The press release states, “It is still unclear how or why the magazine was on campus, but no evidence of a weapon was found and there was never an immediate threat.”

On Tuesday, CHS will reopen for the regular school day and additional contact persons will be available to “alleviate the concerns of students, parents and staff,” the email said.

You can read the full email below:

“As mentioned in the previous email, a magazine was found by a student in the lower parking lot of the CHS campus. The student reported this to CNP police officers who searched and found the magazine. There was no weapon connected to the magazine nor was a threat of any kind made, but out of an abundance of caution, CHS locked down the entire campus. The magazine was for a smaller caliber handgun.

CNP detectives called in additional officers from the Choctaw PD and began investigating. It is still unclear how or why the magazine was on campus, but no evidence of a weapon was found and there was never an immediate threat.

At the end of the day, CNP police officers conducted a full search of the campus to ensure safety.

Tomorrow is the regular school day again at CHS. However, we will continue to have additional contacts available to ease the concerns of students, parents and/or staff.

Across the district, we are working with CNP police officers and other local officials to prepare for emergencies. The lockdown plan worked effectively and everyone was safe and sound in the building. I want to commend the swift efforts of CHS students, teachers, and administration to get everyone to safety. We appreciate the important work of the CNP Police Department, as well as our local Choctaw Police Department, today and every day.

Thank you to all parents who have shown patience in working with school administration to ensure the safety of all students during the day and during pick-up time. Your child’s health and safety remains our top priority.

Yours sincerely,

David Reid, Superintendent”
