Gujarat’s Nadiad experiences heavy rains, low-lying areas flooded

Nadiad, September 4: The second wave of monsoon rains has hit Kheda district in Gujarat, with Nadiad and surrounding areas experiencing heavy rainfall.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning hit Nadiad and surrounding areas. The region recorded rainfall with Nadiad receiving 7 inches, Kapadvanj and Kathlal 5 inches each and Mahudha 3.5 inches. In the entire Kheda district, the average rainfall was around 3.75 inches.

On September 3, rains caused flooding in several low-lying areas of Nadiad city.

“The accumulation of water caused traffic disruption and two-wheelers were seen riding on the pavements in some parts of the city. Municipal forces were quickly deployed and by the next morning, drainage problems had been resolved, allowing water to recede in most areas,” said sources in Nadiad.

A worrying incident occurred in Vhorvad area of Nadiad where a three-storey building collapsed on Wednesday. “The debris fell on the nearby public road but fortunately no casualties were reported as the building was unoccupied at the time. However, the owner of the building suffered significant property damage as the items stored inside were buried under the debris,” sources said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather warning for various districts in Gujarat for the next few days. Several regions in both Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch are expected to receive significant rainfall between September 5 and 7.

“We have requested residents of these areas to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions, especially in low-lying areas where waterlogging or flooding may occur. The ongoing monsoon has already caused disruption in several parts of Gujarat and this new wave of rains could further affect daily life and local infrastructure,” officials said.
