Greg Abbott orders more barbed wire for US-Mexico border, Kamala Harris says Republicans are ‘fanning the flames of immigration’

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered more razor wire to reinforce the southern border as Vice President Kamala Harris accused the Republican Party of “stoking the fire of fear over immigration.”

His comments come as Kamala Harris tries to convince voters that she can solve the crisis at the southern border. Polls from Redfield and Wilton Strategies suggest 47 percent of respondents trust Donald Trump on immigration, compared to 36 percent who trust the vice president.

On Sunday, Harris attacked the rhetoric of Trump and the Republican Party at a rally in Las Vegas.

“He continues to fan the flames of fear and division,” Harris said at the World Market Center in downtown Las Vegas.

She said addressing the complexities of immigration is serious and “you know Donald Trump is not going to solve the problem.”

“When he was president, he did nothing to improve our immigration system,” she added.

Harris’ campaign stop came about two weeks after Trump held a rally at the same location two weeks ago.

Abbott regularly announces the use of barbed wire, buoys and the army to prevent migrants from entering the country illegally.

Since the introduction of barbed wire in 2023 to curb illegal migration, state and federal governments have been embroiled in an ongoing dispute over the legality of the issue.

This came after Harris made her first trip to the US-Mexico border as the Democratic presidential candidate on September 27.

Abbott said sure in a post.

A recent UnidosUS poll of Latino voters in Nevada and other battleground states found that immigration reform and border security are top priorities. Voters expressed strong support for measures that provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

Harris highlighted the bipartisan border security bill that failed after Trump ordered Republican lawmakers to oppose it.

The bill would have given the president the authority to deny all asylum applications and added 1,500 more CBP officers and 4,300 asylum officers to deal with the immigration backlog.

Harris said Trump “kicked out the bill” because he believed it would hurt his campaign.

Trump has also promised mass deportation if he is elected to a second term. However, the plans drew criticism within the GOP.

“We need comprehensive immigration reform, strong border security and an earned path to citizenship,” Harris said.

Harris said there are hard-working immigrants who “have been here for years, including our Dreamers,” referring to immigrants who came to the United States with their families when they were children.

A “Dreamer” is an immigrant who was brought to the United States illegally as a child but has since identified as an American.

Harris supports measures that provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, including so-called Dreamers.

However, Trump advocates ending the Dreamers program to curb migration.
