GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) – National Park Service officials have asked for volunteers to help rehabilitate hiking trails in several locations.

They are looking for volunteers for three different roles: trail volunteers, Clingman’s Dome Rovers and campground hosts.

Volunteers for the hiking trail are needed until September.

They are needed on the Ramsey Cascades Trail every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

They need volunteers for the Little Cataloochee Trail on Thursdays at the same time.

“Hiker volunteers perform a variety of maintenance tasks on the trails, such as installing drainage systems, resurfacing trail surfaces, constructing raised trail sections, and removing brush. All hikers must be able to hike at least three miles and safely perform strenuous and often difficult physical labor. Volunteers should be able to lift heavy objects and use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, axes, and tree shears.”

The park provides all materials needed for the projects.

The Clingman’s Dome Rovers educate visitors about the park’s natural and cultural history.

Rovers are required to volunteer four hours per week and can contact Julie Flores at [email protected] for more information.

The North Carolina side of the park requires campground hosts who will stay at the campground with their own RVs or trailers.

They help the park rangers keep track of the different campsites.

“Hosts inform rangers about campground conditions, including occupancy status, problem visitors, visitor illnesses or injuries, hazardous situations, weather conditions, wildlife sightings, and maintenance and supply needs,” officials said.
