Graham said Aiken County is poised for a “monumental” storm recovery

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham came to North Augusta Thursday to learn about Hurricane Helene and offer some remarks of his own.

He is the latest in a series of politicians to come to CSRA since Friday’s hurricane. Some of the most famous are Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday And GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump on Friday.

“Vice President Harris was in Augusta. Was it yesterday? So you won’t be forgotten,” Graham said. “I’m here. The governor was here. I think the extent of the damage, the fact that you were hit harder than anyone else, and the recovery task in Aiken County seems monumental.”

He said he wants the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Aiken County to help suffering residents.

“FEMA will be here before the sun comes up tomorrow,” he promised. “They are the ones who know the system and they have done a good job. You have to come here.”

He said he would reach out and make it happen.

“People are literally on their last legs,” he said.

He also said there appears to be a “blockage” in receiving Red Cross assistance in Aiken County. He says he will point out the problem and insist it be fixed.

He commented on that The storm has a huge impact on South Carolina’s power grid.

He also said he would like to see some solutions to avoid such situations in the future – like burying power lines.

“Well, what if they were underground – I think they would be working,” he said. “I know it costs more up front, I’m sure it’s very expensive.” But I think we’ll get our money back. I think there are people who would still be alive today. What is that worth? That’s worth a lot to me.”
