Governor Pillen issues statement on efforts to ease state spending caps under property tax relief plan

LINCOLN, NE – Today, Governor Jim Pillen issued the following statement regarding efforts by some Senators to weaken local government spending caps in the property tax relief package currently before the House:

“I will veto any bill that comes to my desk that would impose lower caps on local governments’ property tax revenues than those contained in LB34 when it was passed for general consideration on Tuesday, August 13. That bill allowed property tax revenues to grow at zero percent or inflation, whichever amount is greaterand included common-sense exceptions for investments in law enforcement and public safety that are necessary to keep our communities safe.

While the current property tax relief plan provides real relief to hardworking Nebradians, further compromises would fall short of the minimum expectations Nebradians have of the Legislature for this special session. Nebradians know that uncontrolled government spending is a root cause of our escalating property tax crisis. I will therefore oppose any watered-down caps.”
