Governor Gianforte encourages Montana homeowners to apply for property tax refunds by October 1

Application window opens on August 15

HELENA, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte announced today that eligible Montana homeowners can apply for their property tax refund of up to $675 starting tomorrow, August 15, at getmyrebate.mt.gov. Applications must be submitted by October 1, 2024.

“Property taxes are too high, which is why we’ve prioritized property tax relief for Montanans in the 2023 legislative session,” said Governor Gianforte. “Together, we’ve achieved the largest property tax refund in Montana history. I encourage people to go online tomorrow and apply for their refund.”

To qualify, you must be a Montana taxpayer who has billed and paid property taxes on your primary residence and have done the following:

  • Residency in Montana for at least seven months in 2023;
  • Lived at this Montana residence for at least seven months in 2023;
  • You have been charged property taxes, including special levies and other fees, for that residence; and
  • Property taxes paid for this residence

To apply for the refund, taxpayers can either visit getmyrebate.mt.gov or submit a paper application.

The application requires the physical address, geocode, the amount of property tax paid as shown on the property tax bill, and the names and social security numbers of the taxpayer and any spouses or dependents.

The IRS has created several tools at getmyrebate.mt.gov to help taxpayers compile this information, including a video showing how to find a property’s geocode.

Taxpayers can choose how they will receive the refund during the application process. The fastest way to receive the refund is through direct deposit into a bank account, but taxpayers can also have the refund sent to them by check.

The department will process applications as they are received and distribute refunds by December 31, 2024.

In 2022, the Governor proposed a $2,000 property tax refund for Montana homeowners for their primary residence in his “Budget for Montana Families.”
