Governor abandons principles at Will Ferrell photo op

Harper Steele said on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” that transphobic Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) “abandoned all his principles” to take a photo with comedian Will Ferrell.

Steele, a trans woman known for her work as a writer on “Saturday Night Live,” promoted her new documentary “Will & Harper” on Wednesday’s episode of the late-night show. She explained that during their cross-country road trip, she and Ferrell went to a basketball game and met Holcomb – who has enacted several anti-trans laws – and who really wanted to take a photo with Ferrell.

“We have an awkward moment with the governor of Indiana, who is not a big transsexual, but he needed to get a photo with Will so badly that he abandoned all of his principles,” Steele said. “And that’s exactly what Will does for me.”

The next day, Ferrell said he “dropped the ball” because he didn’t expect to hit Holcomb.

“I wish I had the wherewithal to ask, ‘How do you feel about trans people?'” Ferrell tells Steele in the documentary.

Holcomb did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“Will & Harper,” which follows Ferrell and Steele’s cross-country road trip to get to know Ferrell Steele after her transition, is now available on Netflix.
