Gotti admits Milan “could smell blood” and mistreated Lecce

Luca Gotti fully admits that Milan could “smell blood” and tore Lecce apart with three goals in that five-minute period at the San Siro. “The team doesn’t have much experience in Serie A.”

The Salentini’s confidence was already drained last week when they squandered a 2-0 lead during stoppages to draw 2-2 with Parma, largely because they missed so many chances to score.

The situation at San Siro was different, but also showed many similarities, as they collapsed again before half-time, conceding three goals in five minutes.

Alvaro Morata’s glancing header from Theo Hernandez’s free kick was Milan’s first shot on goal, quickly followed by a shot into the net from Theo Hernandez and Christian Pulisic firing over the line after Tammy Abraham hit the post.

Gotti recognizes Lecce patterns in defeat against Milan

“We had 38 very good minutes, the type of game Lecce tried to play here at the San Siro. We didn’t just defend, we tried to build moves, create chances, and then it all started with a non-existent free kick. I can’t understand what Dorgu should do in this situation because it’s absurd,” Gotti told Sky Sport Italia.

“We conceded that free kick, a minute later there should have been a free kick to Dorgu, which wasn’t given and that triggered the counterattack for the second goal.” The team doesn’t have much experience in Serie A, so we didn’t try just to hold on and reach halftime, but we tried to force the step forward. Milan are a great team, they smell blood and took full advantage of it.”

In the second half, Rafael Leao sent Theo Hernandez down Milan’s left flank into a large gap in the Lecce defense.

“It was a long ball and Gaspar should have recognized it better before Tete Morente tried to chase it. He should have cut that channel off sooner,” Gotti admitted.

Lecce have taken 94 shots and scored three goals this season, so there is obviously a serious problem keeping them on target.

“It’s certainly been a problem so far.”

Gotti has previously said that Lecce needs to learn to have the right attitude and keep calm at this level, so after these two setbacks there is a risk of further damaging their confidence.

“We need to put this behind us as quickly as possible and be aware that there is a different approach to Serie A games, namely the approach we took for most of the first 38 minutes.”
