Google TV outage left streamers in the lurch last weekend

In brief

  • Google TV was down for most of the day last Saturday.
  • Both the mobile app and Google TV on streaming devices and screens were affected.
  • By Sunday morning everything seemed to have been resolved.

Compared to the way people got their entertainment 25 years ago, our modern era of streaming just feels a lot more civilized. Aside from having access to a wider variety of content than probably any other audience in history has enjoyed, we actively determine what we watch in a way that feels particularly empowering. But as far as we’ve come since the days of fiddling with bunny ears to get a weak station to pick up, problems still arise, and it looks like Google TV ran into some major issues over the weekend.

In a thread on the Android TV Reddit subreddit, user PDPopper shared the news of a Google TV outage, after which he was joined by dozens of voices confirming their own issues (h/t Johnathan Saunders). The issues seem to have first surfaced sometime around noon Saturday (Eastern time), and we’re seeing users reporting that the situation had resolved itself by the early hours of Sunday morning.

During this time, viewers were able to access Google TV services, including both the mobile app and the TV platform. The app essentially stopped displaying anything, while users on the affected devices could still stream using third-party apps, but the For you Screen stopped working and they could not access Google’s Live linear currents.

Some users were able to find a workaround to continue accessing their previously purchased media by using YouTube, which hopefully got them through the afternoon. By Sunday morning, the reports had dried up and it looked like everything was working as normal.

We have reached out to Google for further insight into the cause of this outage and will update this post to share any comments from the company.
