Over the past few weeks, some Google TV owners have been experiencing a “loading error” on the home screen, something that’s been affecting a lot more users lately, but there may be a simple fix.

The main feature of Google TV is the home screen, whose layout can provide recommendations (and advertisements) in addition to the usual apps. However, recently this feature has stopped working for some users.

As many on Reddit have noticed on both Google TV and the latest versions of Android TV, Google’s “For You” recommendations and other homescreen sections aren’t loading. The issue has been occurring for a few weeks, as shown by other Reddit posts and emails we’ve received. We first noticed the issue earlier this month, but since then it’s slowly started appearing for more and more users.

The problem occurs with Chromecast with Google TV, Walmart’s Onn boxes, and even TVs with Google TV or Android TV built in.

The exact cause is unclear, however. As far as we can tell, the most likely explanation is a faulty server-side update that accidentally made its way to some users over the course of a few weeks, but to a larger number of users in the last few days. There was some sort of outage over the weekend that caused a similar issue, but also affected the Google TV app on mobile. This has since been fixed.

In any case, those affected may be able to resolve the issue on their TVs (if they are still affected) by simply logging out of their account and logging back in. However, this does not work for all users, with many reporting that even a full factory reset causes the issue to reoccur.

Fortunately, a complete solution is being planned.

Google states on its forums that it began rolling out a fix for this issue on August 16, but as is often the case, it may take some time before it is available to everyone.
