Google Search app on Android keeps crashing and stopping due to an error

On Saturday evening (PT), numerous Android users experienced that the Google app repeatedly crashed when attempting to perform a search (“Google freezes”).

Update: The Google app has started working again for some Android users around 11pm PT.

The company confirmed the “service interruption” at 11:07 p.m. PT.

There is an ongoing issue with delivery in Google Search that is affecting a large number of users searching with the Google app on Android. We are working to determine the root cause and the next update will be within 12 hours.

Opening the Google app from the homescreen icon causes a crash. You see the app load briefly before returning you to the homescreen. The Google search bar widget briefly displays your previous queries before crashing.

Pixel Launcher’s search bar still works for device searches, but when entering a query, the results page will load briefly before crashing.

Google Discover (on the left side of your home screen) won’t launch, and tapping the voice search microphone also stops the Google app.

After repeated attempts to launch the app, Android displays the message “Google keeps stopping”.

Mention in the comments in which country this problem occurs

We’re seeing this crashing issue on the latest stable (15.35) and beta (15.36) versions of the Google Search app on Android 15, 14, and (presumably) earlier. Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and other Android devices are affected.

Google Assistant (voice commands), Gemini, Google Lens and even Circle to Search will continue to work while google.com will work normally via Chrome for Android. So that’s your workaround. You can also use the Gemini app.

No other platforms are affected, so we believe this is a Google app on Android-specific issue. Google Search – as well as all other first-party services like YouTube, Gmail, Drive, Docs, etc. – continue to function normally as of Saturday evening/Sunday morning.

This will draw comparison with the WebView bug in 2021, but only the Google app is affected. However, the Google app runs and is responsible for many services on Android.

Google keeps stopping/crashing workarounds

As of this evening, there is no obvious solution, but google.com still works in Chrome and other mobile browsers.

Older versions of the Google app are also affected, so you can’t get everything working again via App Info > Uninstall Updates (which causes other problems).
