Google releases details of its new Nest thermostat and Google TV streamer

Google has published a new blog detailing the new design elements of its Nest Thermostat and Google TV Streamer.

The Nest Thermostat is now available in its fourth generation and is intended to present thoughtful design updates that combine aesthetics with functionality.

“Nest is so iconic. It was such a defining product in the industry. I think it took a lot of courage to rethink its design because when it came out, it really was the beginning of a new era where smart home devices were not only functional but beautiful.”

Ivy Ross, Chief Design Officer for Consumer Devices, on Google

Google also explains that the new design of the Nest Thermostat is based on water. In particular, the way it moves was the trigger for making the Nest Thermostat’s display in the shape of a dome.

“We brought it out from behind the TV, so it had to be something people would like to have on their sideboard.”

The Google TV Streamer is the company’s brand new device and has been redesigned to complement modern interiors, with a focus on a more ergonomic and longer remote control that improves usability. This was achieved by taking care to “minimize the visual and physical weight of the cables while maintaining a lightweight feel.”

The streamer’s slim profile ensures that it remains unobtrusive even in different setups around the TV. The designers have focused on integrating these devices seamlessly into the interior design, making them both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Both products reflect Google’s new prerogative to integrate advanced technology into a home’s interior design. Designers used real-world testing environments, including residential settings, to ensure these devices fit naturally into everyday life. The Nest Thermostat can now also display an analog clock when not in use, further enhancing its integration into living spaces.
