Glenwood Springs police officer shoots man in mall on Labor Day

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – An investigation is ongoing after a Glenwood Springs police officer shot and killed a man at the Glenwood Meadows shopping center Monday afternoon.

According to Glenwood Springs Police Chief Joseph Deras, two patrol officers were on routine patrol in the area when they spotted a man with an outstanding warrant for a weapons offense.

When officers contacted the man, he allegedly pulled out a gun. One of the officers fired his service weapon, striking the man, Deras said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Deras identified him only as “a single white male from the area.” The officers were not injured.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is investigating with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Deras said investigators recovered a high-capacity firearm with multiple rounds of ammunition inside. The man also had access to additional ammunition, according to the police chief.

No civilians were injured on Monday. Deras said the scene of the accident is currently being investigated, which will take several hours. He said many people who had parked at the mall would not be able to get to their cars during that time.
