Glen Powell reacts to the backlash from the “Twisters” over the missing kiss

Kiss or not, Glen Powell is just happy that fans care enough about him Twisters to start the discourse online.

In an interview with Screenrantthe actor who plays alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones in the 1996 sequel Twistersrecently shared his reaction to the surprising uproar caused by the omission of a kiss between the two leads in the film.

“I take this very personally!” he said. “I’m sure you saw what happened behind the scenes where I got to kiss Daisy Edgar-Jones and that’s really all that matters. (Laughs) We had a great time and I’m really proud of the film.”

Throughout the film, romantic tension builds between Tyler, a successful storm chaser played by Powell, and Kate, a retired tornado chaser played by Edgar-Jones, as they team up to battle a massive tornado. However, an on-screen kiss never made it into the final cut, and it was only later that footage surfaced on social media of the two stars filming an alternate ending in which they kiss (which disappointed some fans).

“I really think that even this (backlash) shows that people care, which is really great,” Powell added. “I just love how excited people are about this movie, and Daisy and I send each other the TikToks and gifs. There’s so much funny stuff that comes out of it. It’s fun. That’s what summer movies are about. They create this conversation and this cultural moment, and people dress up and do the thing. It’s been really great. So, kiss or not, everybody’s a winner.”

Director Lee Isaac Chung has previously explained why he chose the ending without a kiss and stands by his final decision.

“I actually tried the kiss and it was very polarizing – and it’s not because of their performance of the kiss,” the filmmaker said. “That (no kiss) was the other option I had filmed that day and I have to say, I like it better. I think it’s a better ending. And I think that people who want a kiss in there can probably assume that one day these guys will kiss. And maybe we can give them privacy to do that.”

He continued at the time: “In some ways, this ending is a means of making sure that we really wrap things up in a celebratory, good way. If it ends with the kiss, then it makes it seem like it’s Kate’s journey that ends with a kiss. But instead, it’s better if it ends with her being able to carry on doing what she’s doing with a smile on her face.”

Edgar-Jones also described the ending, which made it into the final version, as “beautiful and refreshing”.
