GiveSendGo | Terrace Remodeling Service Project

My name is Sheridan Parker and I am 17 years old and in my final year of a wonderful leadership and character building program called American Heritage Girls (AHG). I deserve the “Stars & Stripes Award, the highest award one can achieve at AHG; similar to the BSA’s Eagle Scout Award. I am working on a community outreach project that requires a minimum of 100 hours of service and mandatory hours of supervision of other youth. My outreach project must meet a number of requirements, have a lasting impact on the organization, and demonstrate leadership and planning skills. To earn this award, I will design and renovate a patio remodeling project that will benefit the War Memorial Hospital long-term care facility.

War Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit health facility located in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. The hospital opened in 2012 with 25 inpatient beds, 16 long-term care beds, and an eight-bed emergency department. The hospital’s long-term care facility (also known as an extended care facility) is home to 16 patients over the age of 70 who live there due to their medical conditions. Long-term care is for patients with disabilities or patients who require constant care.

The War Memorial Hospital nursing facility has an outdoor patio area that patients and their families use regularly. Currently, the patio area is uninviting, lacks shade and comfortable seating, and could use some TLC. I will renovate the patio area to correct these issues and create a comfortable, colorful space that patients and guests enjoy spending time in. The hospital’s biggest concern is the lack of outdoor shade, so the main part of my project will be installing a 20-foot tall cedar gazebo. In addition to the gazebo, I want to renovate the raised flower garden by sanding, painting, and replanting flowers. I will update the current seating arrangement to accommodate more people and add a covered porch swing. Adding a children’s play area with a playhouse and slide will benefit the young family members who visit the patients. I plan to create a privacy corner by covering part of the fence with artificial ivy, and my project will also include potted flowers and decorations throughout the patio.

Patients in the hospital are permanent residents and since they rarely leave the house, the time they spend outside is very important to them. For this reason, I know that having a calming and beautiful outdoor space makes their time outside much more enjoyable. I love design and renovations and it gives me so much joy to be able to use my skills to benefit those in need!

I am very excited to be able to design and renovate this outdoor space for the patients, but I need your help!

My goal is to raise $2,500 for this major project. The hospital has generously agreed to match the entire amount.

All proceeds will go to the following causes:

  • 20-foot gazebo
  • Covered bench swing
  • Patio furniture
  • Raised flower garden
  • Children’s playground
  • Flowerpots, plants and flowers
  • Privacy fences
  • Colors and accessories
