GitHub had a major outage but now says its services are “fully operational”

GitHub, the popular code repository and developer platform, has recovered after experiencing some serious issues affecting its website and many GitHub services on Wednesday. The company has rolled back changes to its database infrastructure that apparently caused the problems and says the services are now “fully functional,” according to an 8:26 p.m. ET status update. GitHub was acquired by Microsoft in 2018.

When we first published this story, navigating to GitHub’s main site resulted in an error message saying “No server is currently available to process your request,” but the site was working again soon after. (The error message also included an image of an angry unicorn.) GitHub’s report on the incident also listed issues with things like pull requests, GitHub Pages, Copilot, and the GitHub API.

The situation appears to be escalating rapidly. GitHub’s first status update came at 7:11 p.m. ET, but in the minutes that followed, GitHub reported problems with several of its services. The problems appear to have been widespread, as Downdetector reported more than 10,000 user reports of problems and that the problems were reported quite suddenly. At 7:13 p.m., internet monitoring service NetBlocks also posted that GitHub was experiencing “international outages.”

GitHub did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Update, August 14: GitHub says it has recovered from the major outage.
