Giant sinkhole that blocked road near Bank of America Stadium to reopen: What you should know

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A huge hole in the ground which closed a major road near Bank of America Stadium a few weeks ago, is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, August 13th.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg-Rainwater Services made the Announcement on social media around noon on Monday, August 12. The damaged roadway was located on South Cedar Street at the corner of West Morehead.

In their post Monday, officials said they had completed repairs to the storm sewer line beneath the road. While they noted that the road was expected to reopen on Tuesday, they said workers would “continue to perform minor work in the area.”

The pit-like danger led to some traffic problems, especially during major events in the stadium.

In particular, some drivers had problems during Charlotte FC’s Wednesday night game on July 31st.

“It was just a little traffic problem,” said Dottie Eddings. “This is definitely one of the craziest things I’ve seen this week, you know, a huge hole in the road for no apparent reason.”

WBTV Investigations discovered Charlotte Storm Water staff have been concerned about the possibility of a sinkhole on Cedar Street since at least 2020.

A city sanitation department director wrote in an email that staff were concerned that a sewer line about a block from the site of the recent sinkhole could fail.

“We were very concerned that a sinkhole might form on the road,” the manager wrote.

The culvert that caused concern in 2020 ran along Cedar Street between Stadium View Drive and Stonewall Street.
