Gettysburg College swimmer ‘no longer enrolled’ after carving racist slur on student’s chest

A swimmer who carved a racial slur into another student’s body is no longer enrolled at Gettysburg College, the school said.

The incident, in which a student was allegedly slashed with the N-word in the chest with a box cutter, occurred at a Pennsylvania college swim team meet where the victim was the only person of color, the victim’s family said in a statement.

“The reprehensible act was committed by a fellow student and athlete, by someone he considered his friend, by someone he trusted,” the victim’s family added, saying their loved one had been the victim of a “hate crime.”

The family said the “nightmare” was made worse by the college’s decision to remove their son from the swim team after the attack.

“Less than 48 hours after the incident, our son was interviewed by members of the coaching staff and was dismissed (but not suspended) from the swim team,” the family said.

“The punitive action was taken before the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities began its own investigation and does not appear to comply with the policies and procedures set forth in the Gettysburg College Student-Athlete Manual.”

The statement continued: “Complaints of racial discrimination, harassment and lack of due process have been filed with the Harrisburg NAACP chapter and the Pennsylvania NAACP conference.

“We have also filed a similar complaint with the Pennsylvania Commission on Human Relations. We understand that we have the right to pursue local, state and federal criminal charges in this matter.”

The family added: “Our son did not choose to have a hateful racist slur scrawled across his chest, but he chose not to return the hate. He did not choose the color of his skin, but he chose to embrace the strength and diversity it represents. Our son did not choose to be shunned and isolated at the behest of some who only pay lip service to inclusion and diversity.”

The perpetrator has left the university, although it is unclear whether he was expelled or left of his own accord.

“The investigation is nearing completion and we can now report that the individual who carved a slur on another person is no longer enrolled at the college,” Vice President for College Life Anne Ehrlich wrote in an email to the entire campus on Sunday. The Gettysburgian.

The incident reportedly occurred at an “informal” gathering on campus on September 6. While the family said the victim had been dismissed from the swim team, the college said he had been suspended along with the student who allegedly carried out the attack.

Gettysburg College President Bob Iuliano said a senior on the swim team reported the attack. “I want to emphasize my deep dismay at what happened, its impact on those who have long been underrepresented on this campus, and its consequences for a community that continues its efforts to create a truly inclusive environment,” he said.

Gettysburg College said in a statement last week that it had received “an extremely disturbing report that a student had a racial slur carved into his face using a plastic or ceramic tool.”

“This is a serious report that is being actively evaluated as part of the student conduct process,” the statement continued. “At this time, the students involved will not participate in swim team activities pending the outcome of the student conduct process. Due to privacy laws and the ongoing nature of the student conduct process, we are unable to provide any further details.”

Gettysburg is a popular tourist destination because it was the site of a battle during the Civil War in 1863 and where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address that same year.
