Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman announced the return of Tax-Free Shop Maryland Week from Sunday, August 11, through Saturday, August 17.
During Shop Maryland Tax Free Week, shoppers don’t have to pay the 6% sales tax on clothing and shoes under $100 or the first $40 on backpacks. The annual sales tax holiday begins on the second Sunday in August and coincides with the time when many Maryland families shop before the new school year.
“Maryland’s Tax Free Shopping Week is a great opportunity for shoppers to save money on essential items and protect their budgets, especially as we continue to struggle with rising prices and consumers feel like they are paying more for less,” said Comptroller Lierman. “I hope this temporary relief helps boost traffic and sales at our local stores and the purchasing power of Maryland shoppers.”
Between August 11 and 17, any single item of clothing or footwear priced at $100 or less will be exempt from sales tax, regardless of the number of items purchased.
“Maryland’s retailers are the backbone of our state’s economy,” said Cailey Locklair, president of the Maryland Retailers Alliance. “Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week is an opportunity for shoppers from Maryland and beyond to save money and support their community by using the money they save to shop at their local retailers, as well as restaurants, entertainment venues and other local businesses.”
For online purchases, items are exempt from VAT if they are paid for and delivered within the tax-free period or if they are paid for and accepted for immediate dispatch.
