Georgia-based trucking company opens terminal in Watertown

Sometimes companies need to ship small loads. Companies simply don’t have enough goods to fill an entire truck.

That’s where Georgia-based Saia Inc. (NASDAQ: SAIA) comes in. The company is a leading less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier.

Saia is opening two terminals in South Dakota, including one in Watertown. The Watertown terminal opened on Monday.

According to a press release, the company is adding six new terminals to its network in August. These new facilities are part of Saia’s planned westward expansion to improve service capabilities and support a growing customer base in this important region.

In addition to Water Town and Rapid City, the company is expanding to Casper and Cheyenne, Wyoming and Billings and Butte, Montana.

The company has long had a terminal in Sioux Falls.

“August marks a significant culmination of our efforts to expand our presence in the Western U.S. this year,” said Ray Ramu, Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer of Saia. “Our continued expansion is key to our customer-centric approach to ensuring that the investments we make in our network benefit our carriers.”

Ramu said the new terminals would further strengthen the company’s presence in the West, improve service offerings and provide greater flexibility and efficiency in shipping.

These new terminals are an integral part of Saia’s strategic growth, improving direct shipping points and supporting the local economy through improved shipping services and job creation. In addition to Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming, Saia has expanded its presence in 2024 with new facilities in California, Iowa, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Texas and Utah. By the end of the year, the company plans to open 18 to 21 locations, further expanding its national network.

Saia is actively hiring new employees, including drivers, dock workers, and for various office, sales and management positions, including in Watertown.
