George Clooney praises Biden’s resignation as “most selfless act” since George Washington

Actor George Clooney on Sunday praised President Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race as “the most selfless thing anyone has done since George Washington.”

In July, Clooney wrote a famous op-ed for The New York Times headlined “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Candidate,” in which he admitted that Biden had declined and insisted that the Democratic Party needed a new candidate to defeat former President Trump. Biden eventually relented, and Clooney couldn’t be happier.

“The person who should be applauded is the president who has committed the most selfless act that anyone has done since George Washington,” Clooney told reporters when asked about the lightness that The Washington Post showed him.

“We should remember the selfless act of someone who – you know, it’s very difficult to give up power. We know that. We’ve seen it all over the world,” Clooney continued. “And for someone to say, ‘I think there’s a better way forward.’ All the credit goes to him… And everything else will be long gone and forgotten.”

Clooney, who was speaking to the press at the Venice Film Festival where his new film “Wolfs” premiered Sunday night, did not mention Vice President Kamala Harris in his remarks, according to the Post.

“I’m just very proud of the state of the world, which surprises a lot of people, and I think we’re all very excited about the future,” Clooney told the media outlet.

Clooney’s call for Biden to step down “was seen as a major factor in the president’s exit from the race,” the Post reported. The publication came on the heels of Biden’s disastrous presidential debate, which forced a number of his allies to publicly call for a new candidate.

“NO ONE BELIEVES HARRIS’ DEFENSE OF BIDEN’S HEALTH,” CNN spokesman Scott Jennings tells the panel during a tense exchange

“It’s devastating to say this, but the Joe Biden I was with at the fundraiser three weeks ago was not the Joe ‘Big F-ing Deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all saw at the debate,” Clooney wrote.

“Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw. We are all so frightened by the prospect of a second Trump term that we have chosen to ignore every warning sign,” he added. “It’s about age. That’s all. But it’s also not something that can be reversed. We’re not going to win in November with this president.”
