Gen X woman gives perfect response to baby boomer who yelled at her for using her phone

Living in different times can cause people of different generations to think differently. While disagreements can be a normal thing, sometimes people tend to cross boundaries. A Gen X woman, u/Nikongirl78, posted on Reddit about an incident where a baby boomer crossed her boundaries and how she got back at him without really making a big scene. The woman admitted that she had previously believed that posts about baby boomers on various social platforms might exaggerate their characteristics a bit.

“I’ve been lurking around here for a while, laughing at the posts, thinking, ‘It can’t be that bad.’ Karma proved me wrong,” the 45-year-old said. “I accompanied my boyfriend to a few appointments he had because they were in a city I don’t often go to. (He traded the wait with the promise of going shopping afterwards),” the woman added. “Here I am minding my own business and browsing on my phone. Boomer comes to the desk, announces his information LOUDLY, and sits across from me.” The woman looked at Boomer anyway, smiled politely, and went back to her phone.

“Then he starts declaring just as LOUDLY, ‘You know, this is what I hate about you young people these days,'” the woman revealed. She was quite confused by the man’s accusation and asked what he meant. “That… (points to my phone) Everyone is on these damn things now. Nobody talks to anyone anymore,” the man said. “Maybe, but I was also taught not to talk to strangers, so…” the woman replied. The Boomer was still complaining about how everyone is always on their phones these days. “Who? I’m the only one here,” the woman asked the angry man. “Exactly! We should talk,” the man continued. “Sir, I don’t know you. Why should I talk to you?” she finally retaliated.

“He’s now walking around the waiting room, grumbling LOUDLY and talking to anyone who comes in. I understand you’re probably lonely, but that’s not how you make friends,” the GenX woman noted. People took to the comment section of the post to support the woman and voice their opinions on the incident. u/sassychubzilla commented, “‘See, the problem with you is that you don’t respect that I’m a man and older than you and that you should be a captive audience. You make me question my importance when you ignore me and make me feel uncomfortable. You’re mean. Nobody likes you because you’re mean.’ Of course, there are just a few brain cells in his head frantically rubbing against each other, so I imagine his inner dialogue has fewer words and more illustrations.”

u/ilanallama85 shared, “It’s so disingenuous. Anyone who remembers a time before cell phones should remember that every waiting room, bus, and subway was full of people avoiding eye contact by burying their heads in their books/newspapers/magazines/knitting/etc. No one ever ‘talked’ in those places. At least no one anyone liked. So either he’s lying or he’s always been a miserable busybody who can’t keep himself occupied for five minutes.” u/Jsmith2127 expressed, “My mother-in-law is in her early 80s. When she goes to appointments, she brings her Kindle, reads, and minds her own business. Maybe this guy needs a Kindle.”
