Game updates, live scores in NFL Week 2

LANDOVER, Maryland — The New York Giants are focusing on preparation instead of panicking. It’s a game, they say – a game with a frustratingly bad score after the Minnesota Vikings handed them a 28-6 loss in the season opener for both teams.

Daniel Jones had problems. The pass rush was neutralized, with the exception of Dexter Lawrence. Hardly anything went right.

But when the Giants take the field here at Northwest Stadium on Sunday afternoon, coach Brian Daboll isn’t promising any sweeping changes to the lineup, schedule or process by which Big Blue prepares for what will ultimately be a massive game against an NFC East opponent that’s essentially in the same weight class.

“The most important thing is to stay as consistent as possible, whether you get a good win or a good loss,” Daboll said. “You always weigh whether it’s a play or a personnel decision, because you try to be as competitive as possible. But you try to stay as consistent as possible and make the right decision for the team.”

Check back throughout the day for live updates from Giants commanders.

Jason Pinnock’s sack forces the field goal attempt, Thibodeaux charges well and drives Daniels off his spot. Washington’s Seibert scores a 42-yard field goal to tie the score.

Devin Singletary scored the Giants’ first touchdown of the season on a 7-yard run by jumping around blocks by right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor and tight end Chris Manhertz. Graham Gano’s hamstring injury showed up immediately when punter Jamie Gillan – with reserve quarterback Drew Lock opposing him – beat the PAT attempt to the right.

Big game, bigger success.

Malik Nabers was tackled by Washington linebacker Frankie Luvu at the end of a 28-yard catch-and-run by Daniel Jones from the blind side. The Giants were inside the 15-yard line, but the official spotter rushed to the field and Nabers was taken off the field for a concussion evaluation. He missed the rest of the drive but was cleared.

16 plays, 64 yards, 9:36.

Washington 3, Giants 0.

NYG has a lot to work through, but they only allow a 27-yard field goal to Washington’s Austin Seibert.

Dru Phillips with two tackles and a loss of yardage on the drive, including a sack.

The game got off to a terrible start, however, when kicker Graham Gano injured his hamstring after Austin Ekeler returned the opening kick for a touchdown. The score was wiped out by two penalties, but it is doubtful whether Gano will return.

The Giants win the coin toss and move their pick to the second half. The Commanders and Jayden Daniels receive.

The Giants want to avoid the first 0-2 start in the Joe Schoen-Brian Daboll era.

The last time they started 0-2 was in 2021, when Dave Gettleman and Joe Judge were GM and HC.

Since 2013, they have started 0-2 eight times, most of them in the NFL.

Gano went to the locker room after appearing to be bothered by his groin injury at the start of warm-ups. Since returning to the field, he has mastered kicks from 56 and 60 yards and appears to be more comfortable

Graham Gano was placed on the injured list Saturday with a groin injury, but the Giants have not assigned him a game status. Gano was expected to kick on Sunday, and practice squad kicker Jude McAtamney, a freshman from Rutgers, was not named to the active roster.

Gano appeared to end his warm-up early and went inside after looking a little uncomfortable after a few kicks, but he has now returned to the field and continued.

Inactive Giants

  • QB Tommy DeVito (emergency quarterback)
  • S. Anthony Johnson, Jr.
  • CB Nick McCloud
  • ILB Darius Muasau
  • OLB Boogie Basham
  • G Jake Kubas

Inactive Commanders

  • CB Emmanuel Forbes
  • QB Sam Hartman (emergency quarterback)
  • S Darrick Forrest
  • LB Dominique Hampton
  • Linebacker Jamin Davis
  • WR Jamison Crowder
  • G Chris Paul

Tommy DeVito is on the field early warming up. He’s been inactive for some time, but he’s back in uniform today as the emergency QB3. The last time the Giants were here, DeVito threw three touchdowns in a 31-19 win last November.

Drew Lock will once again back up Daniel Jones, but if Jones struggles in the first half, could Brian Daboll make a switch like he did on Christmas Day in Philadelphia last season and switch from DeVito to Tyrod Taylor for the second half?

That’s certainly possible, but if the Giants trade Jones, it’s hard to imagine them going back to him. I believe they’ll hold onto Jones for at least the first month, and if the Giants are winless on a short week after next Sunday’s home game at Cleveland and Dallas, Lock would potentially have 10 days to prepare for a potential first start in Seattle against the team he was on last year.

The Giants believe in their process. “No panic, just urgency,” is how safety Jason Pinnock put it the day after the 28-6 loss in Week 1 last Sunday.

At some point you may need to make everyone a little uncomfortable to see how they react. A team can get lost if too many changes are made in such a short period of time.

If enough changes are not made to fix the bugs, a season can be lost.

Which side will Brian Daboll’s Giants be on? We’ll find out today.

Injury updates for the NY Giants vs. Commanders

The Giants have placed kicker Graham Gano on the injured list because of a groin issue. However, he is ineligible to play, so he is expected to take over kicking duties.

Given the way the NFL has promised to crack down on injury reports and have teams list injuries or anything that prevents players from completing their normal workouts, it has become difficult to judge player availability based solely on reported ailments. Case in point: Gano’s groin issues. That’s enough for the Giants to feel the need to report on it, so it’s something to keep an eye on.

Then, given last year’s game against the Jets as a backdrop, when an injured Gano attempted to kick despite a knee injury — and missed a potential game-winning kick — it’s understandable that fans would react the way some did. The Giants did not name practice squad kicker Jude McAtamney for the game, instead selecting ILB Ty Summers and OLB Tomon Fox, both of whom will likely play core roles on special teams.

It might be wise to reduce the stress on Gano by having someone else take over the kickoffs. McAtamney would make the most sense, but maybe punter Jamie Gillan can do it. That way you let Gano kick and don’t have to worry about adjustments.

The Giants also have last week as a reference: They did not take Gunner Olszewski out of the game and he re-aggravated his injury during warmups. Olszewski was placed on the injured list on Saturday.

NFL Network reported Sunday morning that Washington rookie DT Johnny Newton (foot) will make his debut. Newton visited the Giants as part of the pre-draft process.

An update on non-player injuries: Giants OLB coach Charlie Bullen broke his leg in a collision on the sidelines in the fourth quarter of the loss to the Vikings. Bullen underwent surgery Thursday morning and defensive coordinator Shane Bowen will be more involved with the position during his recovery. Bowen has been working with linebackers as a position coach.

Bullen did not travel with the team to Maryland as he is still recovering. Assistant Ben Burress will come out of the box and work with the position group on the sidelines.

Prediction for NY Giants vs. Commanders

The selection: Commanders 17, Giants 10

Here’s why: Daniel Jones and the Giants were Washington’s number (5-1-1 in his career), but that was under the Ron Rivera/Jack Del Rio regime. Meanwhile, in Dallas, Dan Quinn beat the Giants as DC. The Giants were the only team not to score double digits in Week 1, so until they do, it’s hard to predict them winning a game.
