The last time Iowa State traveled to Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, things were going pretty well for the Cyclones.
A lot has changed since then. Hunter Dekkers, Jirehl Brock and Xavier Hutchinson led the Cyclones to a 10-7 victory over Spencer Petras and Sam LaPorta’s Hawkeyes in 2022. Now led by Rocco Becht, Abu Sama, Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, the Cyclones face the Hawkeyes, led by quarterback Cade McNamara and Phil Parker’s defense.

Latest information on Caleb Bacon’s injury
Iowa State football linebacker Caleb Bacon will be out “for a while,” coach Matt Campbell told reporters Tuesday.
Bacon underwent surgery on Sunday for a “lower leg injury.” Campbell said Bacon could return later this season.
“I believe he has the ability to get back in the game at some point this football season and that’s honestly the best news we could hear on Saturday,” Campbell said. “I believe he’ll be back here later in the season or have the opportunity to get back in the game later in the season depending on his recovery.”
Losing Bacon to a physically strong Hawkeye offense is a big blow, as the linebacker recorded 60 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks last year.
Junior Zachary Lovett and sophomore Jack Sadowsky initially took over Bacon’s role on defense and earned praise from Campbell.
“I thought both guys stepped in,” Campbell said. “How well did they play, what did that look like… I thought both guys made some plays, some plays that were really positive.”

Travis Hines, Cyclone columnist, prediction: Iowa 14, Iowa State 10… The Hawkeyes’ running game seemed to be firing on all cylinders last week against Illinois State, and with the Cyclones incredibly thin at linebacker, this is a difficult opponent to face. Iowa also has the special teams advantage due to its own track record, and the Cyclones have a kicker who has yet to attempt a field goal in his career. The Hawkeyes’ defense and the atmosphere at Kinnick Stadium will ultimately be too much for the Cyclones to handle, as Iowa State’s struggles against its in-state rival continue for another year.
Chad Leistikow, Hawkeye columnist, prediction: Iowa 22, Iowa State 17 … Three things shifted my preseason prediction six points in Iowa’s direction: improved quarterback play, Iowa State’s injury situation and the emotional boost of head coach Kirk Ferentz returning from a one-game suspension. The Hawkeyes’ offense hasn’t managed more than 313 yards since the 2017 game against Iowa State, but they’ll surpass that mark in Tim Lester’s second game as offensive coordinator. Some timely running from the wide receivers, a strong kicking game, a tough defense and clean quarterback play helped Iowa win, putting the total over 35.
