FX series Shōgun breaks Emmy record with 14 awards for a single season

The FX series Shōgun, set in feudal Japan, has won 14 Primetime Emmy Awards and set a new record for the highest box office gross of a single TV season.

As Entertainment Weekly reported, Shōgun received awards including Best Cinematography, Best Casting for a Drama, Best Production Design, Best Special Visual Effects, and many more.

The full list of awards is as follows:

  • Best Cast for a Drama
  • Best Camera
  • Best Guest Actor in a Drama (for Néstor Carbonell)
  • Best Main Title Design
  • Best historical costumes
  • Best historical/fantasy hairstyle
  • Best period/fantasy makeup
  • Best photo editing
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Prosthetic Makeup
  • Best sound editing
  • Best sound mix
  • Best special effects
  • Best Stunt Performance

Released in early 2024, Shōgun is a retelling of James Clavell’s classic novel, which tells the story of Lord Toranaga navigating a complex political battlefield to defeat his rivals.

It received high praise from critics, with IGN itself giving Shōgun a 10/10. “FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s Shōgun puts character above combat, telling a complex and beautiful story full of intrigue set in feudal Japan,” we said.

The series was originally planned as just one season, fully adapting Clavell’s novel, but was later renewed for a second and likely third season. FX CEO John Landgraf said in July that the team was already working on the second season, meaning that could also arrive sooner rather than later.
