Funeral of Miami pioneer Dr. Enid Pinkney

MIAMI – The funeral of Dr. Enid Pinkney, who dedicated her life to preserving African-American history in Miami-Dade County, was held Saturday.

Pinkney died last month at the age of 92.

Pinkney was born in Miami-Dade in 1931 and graduated from the then all-black Booker T. Washington High School.

She then worked in the Miami-Dade public school system.

Over time, Pinkney became a well-known activist in South Florida, dedicated to preserving Miami’s black history.

“People would forget the struggle that got us to where we are today,” Pinkney previously told Local 10. “We don’t honor that history. We only care about what’s happening now.”

Pinkney witnessed this history herself and took the lead in establishing brand new memorials to honor three historically black communities in Lemon City – now known as Little Haiti.

“It was the people of Lemon City who, with machetes and the strength of their backs, cleared the land and made Miami what it is today. And we don’t know that history,” she said. “I hope this is the beginning and serves as an example of us caring about how we got to where we are.”

Pinkney also spearheaded the restoration of the historic Hampton House in Overtown, the only remaining segregation-era motel in Miami.

In the 1960s, it was the place to see and be seen in Miami’s black community, with famous visitors such as Muhammed Ali and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Local 10 anchor Calvin Hughes previously met with Pinkney to tell her about watching King as a child.

“He went to Virginia Key Beach. He loved the beach,” she said. “I heard him speak at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He spoke there, and people came to hear him. He could always draw a crowd.”

Pinkney was a South Florida historian who will be remembered for her passion and pride as she worked tirelessly to preserve African American heritage.
