Funeral for Fort Worth Police Sgt. Billy Randolph to be held Saturday

The funeral of Fort Worth Police Sergeant Billy Randolph will be held Saturday morning.

Randolph, a 29-year veteran of the Fort Worth Police Department, died Monday after he was struck by an accused drunk driver while working at the scene of an accident.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. at Christ Chapel Bible Church in Fort Worth.

A procession will precede the funeral from the Bob Bolen Public Safety Complex on Felix Street to the church, expected to begin at 8:30 a.m.

Members of the public wishing to attend the event are asked to park in the yellow Dickies car park. Shuttle buses to the church will be available.

There are only a limited number of seats available in the church.

Sergeant Billy Randolph

Sergeant Billy Randolph was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served with the Fort Worth Police Department for 29 years.

Randolph was called to the scene of a serious accident involving a semi-trailer truck on I-35W Monday morning.

At 5:30 a.m., police said, 25-year-old De Aujalae Evans drove the wrong way up an exit ramp, drove through barricades and struck Randolph.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A candlelight vigil was held for Randolph on Wednesday, his 57th birthday.

Police officers who knew him described him as “a police officer.”

Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said Randolph asked to be allowed to work the night shift.

“He would never ask his team to do something he wouldn’t do. They would do the same for him. That’s why he’s a hero,” Noakes said at the vigil.

Family members described Randolph, a father and grandfather, as a hardworking, industrious and respected officer.

“He was always looking for a way to make the world a better place,” said his brother Matt Randolph. “He loved life.”

Randolph leaves behind his wife, Lisa, and a daughter, Kayla.

Suspect arrested after accident

25-year-old De Aujalae Evans is accused of manslaughter while intoxicated, causing the death of a police officer.

An arrest warrant affidavit states that Evans fired 10 shots before getting behind the wheel and hitting Randolph.

According to police, Evans drove more than a quarter mile after hitting the officer before attempting to flee.

Witnesses saw Evans jump over a wall to get to a nearby Motel 6, the warrant says. She was caught near the parking lot and taken into custody.

Records show Evans has been arrested multiple times over the past five years. She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carrying of a weapon in 2023 after shooting her partner in 2023. She was sentenced to six years’ probation and was not allowed to drink alcohol at the time of the accident.

She is currently in the Tarrant County Jail on $750,000 bail.
