From record cold to almost record heat in one week!

The last week of August will remind us that we are still in the grip of one of the hottest and driest summers in recent history.

And this after a nice respite last week with temperatures like in October.

While we have broken or reached record low temperatures three mornings in a row in Charleston, we are in danger of seeing record high temperatures at least three days in a row this week.

In fact, it’s quite possible that Charleston and Huntington will record their first official day over 100 degrees since 2012.

Unfortunately, the chance of rain is very low through the weekend. A front will produce thunderstorms across central Ohio and Pennsylvania on Wednesday, and some of these could move into our area Wednesday night into Thursday morning, but given the dry ground and dry air, much of this will likely dissipate. Scattered thunderstorms will develop Friday afternoon, and it’s possible that some football games will be delayed by lightning strikes.

Speaking of delays, some high school football games may also have their kickoffs pushed back a bit because of the heat, so be sure to check WCHSTV.com for the latest developments.

While college football fans won’t have to endure temperatures over 100 degrees, Saturday’s games may see showers and possibly thunderstorms that disrupt play.

A stronger front will give us our best chance of rain in over two weeks. While it won’t be a downpour, it could definitely rain for Thundering Herd and Mountaineer fans for an hour or two, either during the cookout or the game itself.

This front (and another Sunday) will help lower temperatures, leading to more pleasant weather in a week.

Unfortunately, the rains over the next seven days will do little to nothing to alleviate the extreme drought in the region, and this will remain a major problem well into September.
