The man arrested for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sanjay Roy, had a history of failed marriages. Police also found pornography on Roy’s mobile phone, who had easy access to several departments of the hospital due to his work as a volunteer in the police welfare department.
Worked as a volunteer with a salary of Rs 12,000
Citizen helpers are contractual employees who are recruited to assist police officers in various tasks, including traffic management and disaster relief. They are paid around Rs 12,000 a month.
According to a NDTV According to reports, Roy joined the Kolkata Police Disaster Response Group as a volunteer in 2019 but later moved to the police welfare department. He then moved to the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and had access to all departments.

Roy was reportedly involved in a hospital scam that involved charging relatives of patients for admission to the hospital. He also charged patients’ relatives for seeking a bed at a nearby nursing home when they could not get a bed at the government hospital.
Posed as a police officer, showed no remorse for the crimes
Although he was not a regular police officer, Roy introduced himself as a Kolkata Police officer and walked around wearing a T-shirt with KP (Kolkata Police) written on it. His bicycle also had a KP sign on it. He often used his contacts to stay overnight at the police barracks. Many other volunteers thought he was actually a police officer, reports say.
Roy soon confessed to the crime under interrogation. He showed no remorse and said, “Hang me if you want,” reports say.
The half-naked body of the PGT doctor, a second-year pulmonology student, was found in the hospital’s seminar room on Friday. She was on duty on Thursday night and her body bore numerous injury marks. The preliminary autopsy report indicated sexual abuse before her murder, leading her father to claim that she was raped and murdered in the hospital.
Roy was arrested after his activities were deemed quite suspicious. According to sources, Roy had a history of inappropriate behavior toward women in the hospital.
