Friday Food Truck: Gorditas Las Lupitas

If you drive down 12th Avenue, you will see many food trucks selling mainly tacos and hot dogs. Or you will find some that Cocktail made from Elote (corn in a cup). However, it is not too common to find a food truck that serves gorditas. Here La Gorda comes into play.

Most days the sun shines, Latin music plays from the speakers and your food is brought to your table outside.

Yes, they sell gorditas, as the name suggests, but they offer many different foods including sopes, tostadas and of course we can’t forget tacos.

Jesus Antonio RuizOwner of Gorditas Las Lupitas, runs the food truck with his family. “It’s a family business. We just run it, there are no experts working here. My wife, my daughter and I,” said Ruiz.

In 2018, Ruiz and his wife Mirnawho both love to cook, founded the company because they wanted to bring something different to the table.

“Hardly anyone sells gorditas here, especially the Sinaloa style. We never run out of food because everyone goes out to eat. We even have customers who come here at least three times a week just to eat. I’m surprised they’re not tired of the food yet,” Ruiz said.

Traditional dishes on the menu at Gorditas Las Lupitas include Chicharrón en Salsa Verde, Cochinita Pibil, Carne con Chile Colorado, Rajas, Gartinada, Picadillo, And Nachos with carne.

These are just some of the traditional dishes found in Sonora, where Ruiz grew up, and also in Sinaloa, where Mirna grew up. The couple, born in different states, bring new flavors to the community.

When I had to decide what I wanted to eat, I had to The Rajas Gorditasa thick, round cake made of masa (corn dough). The cheese and cream melted and mixed with the poblano chile so that every bite was delicious and creamy and you never got enough of it.

The Gardenia had to be the next one I got to devour. It was like eating a bean and cheese burrito that had been broken open. The pork sauce gave it a rich and deep flavor – very savory, a little spicy, with a hint of sweetness and acidity.

Deshebrada Sopealso called shredded beef, has a thick dough base that resembles a tortilla but is smaller and has raised edges to hold the toppings. It is topped with spicy beef as well as lettuce, avocado, onions, carrots and cheese.

Finally, a Chicharrón Tostadaa flat, crispy tortilla with pork rinds and green chili. It’s not spicy, but gives every bite a sweet, spicy kick! Beans, lettuce, avocado, onions, carrots, cucumber, cheese and sour cream round out the dish.

If you want to try something different, you must visit Gorditas Las Lupitas soon.

The food truck is located at 4609 S 12th Ave S. For more information visit Gorditas Las Lupitas on Instagram.
