Here is a recent Associated Press report on the opening ceremony:

PARIS (AP) — The Olympic Games in Paris are coming to an end.

US gymnast Simone Biles made a triumphant return, taking her Olympic gold medal tally to seven. French swimmer Léon Marchand won five medals – four of them gold – and drew comparisons with Michael Phelps. Armand “Mondo” Duplantis won another gold medal, but the real show for the 80,000 at the Stade de France – where the closing ceremony will take place on Sunday – was when he broke the world record for the ninth time.

There was also controversy. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif was in the spotlight because of misconceptions about her gender.

The organizers of the Paris Games largely succeeded in showcasing the beauty of the French capital. Beach volleyball took place next to the Eiffel Tower. However, holding competitions in the polluted Seine proved more difficult.

There will be traditional highlights, including the parade of athletes and the presentation of the Olympic flag to the organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Games. There will be a medal ceremony – for this morning’s women’s marathon.

After the bold opening ceremony on the Seine, this is a more traditional setting, but don’t expect boredom. The artistic director is the same – Thomas Jolly. Organizers said in a recent statement that there will be “over a hundred artists, acrobats, dancers and circus performers.” There will be musical performances and “the participation of world-renowned singers will complete the picture. … Part of the show will take place in the air, while the huge sets, costumes and spectacular lighting effects will take spectators on a journey through time, past and future.”

Jolly added: “It is a very visual, very choreographic, very acrobatic show with an operatic dimension to provide a great visual fresco and to say goodbye to athletes from all over the world.”
