Francis Ford Coppola announces details of two new film projects, one of which will be financed with proceeds from ‘Megalopolis’

Francis Ford Coppola plans two more films after Big cityone of which he wants to finance with the box office revenues of the epic starring Adam Driver.

Megalopolis will be released in US cinemas next September by Lionsgate Films. The screenplay and direction are by Coppola, who spent around $120 million of his own money on the production.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Coppola was asked if Megalopolis would be his last film or if he had plans to make more films afterward.

“I’m working on two possible projects right now,” he replied. “One is a normal film that I would like someone to finance and shoot in England, because I don’t have a long history with my wife in England. I’m constantly reminded of her wherever I go. The other is called Distant Vision and tells the story of three generations of an Italian-American family like mine, but fictionalized, during which the phenomenon of television was invented. I would finance it with what Megalopolis is doing. I’ll try again.”

Coppola is also known for filming The Godfather (1972), The Godfather Part II (1974), Apocalypse Now (1979), The Outsiders (1983), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), The Godfather Part III (1990), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) and others.

When will Megalopolis be in theaters?

After premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Megalopolis will hit U.S. theaters on September 27, 2024.

“Megalopolis is a Roman fable set in an imagined modern America,” the film’s synopsis states. “The city of New Rome must change, leading to conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who wants to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opponent, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains loyal to a regressive status quo and upholds greed, special interests and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties and forces her to explore what she believes humanity truly deserves.”

In addition to Driver, the film stars Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter and others.
