Former UNC basketball captain Joe Wolf has died at the age of 59

Very sad news was announced Thursday evening when Joe Wolf, a former captain of the UNC basketball program, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 59.

The Milwaukee Bucks released the above statement regarding Wolf’s death on social media. Before his death, Wolf served as an assistant coach for the Wisconsin Herd, the Bucks’ G League affiliate.

Wolf played four seasons under Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, helping the Tar Heels to a stunning 115-22 record during that time. During his college career, he was instrumental in helping the UNC basketball program reach the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight twice, and was co-captain (alongside Kenny Smith) during the 1986–1987 season, his final year on campus ). This season, Wolf has been a strong team, averaging 15.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

After his time in Chapel Hill came to an end, Wolf was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers with the No. 13 overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft. He played 11 seasons in the NBA and spent time with seven different franchises.

When his playing days came to an end, Wolf transitioned into coaching and spent time at the collegiate level at William & Mary and UNC Wilmington before moving to the NBA G-League. He served as an assistant coach with both the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks, most recently coaching with the Bucks’ G League affiliate.

Another Tar Heel gone too soon as this news comes as a surprise to the basketball world. It’s safe to say that Joe Wolf had an impact not only in Chapel Hill, but on the sport as a whole, as he will certainly be missed.
