Former Texas Tech baseball star Jace Jung makes his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers

Former Texas Tech baseball standout Jace Jung made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

Jung was called up to the major leagues after being selected 12th overall by the Tigers in the 2022 draft. Against Yankees star Gerrit Cole, Jung went 0-for-2 and walked two in the Tigers’ 3-0 loss. He also struck out twice and was caught stealing.

During the 2024 season, Jung played most of his time for Detroit’s AAA affiliate team in Toledo, posting a batting average of .257 with 15 home runs, 63 RBIs and 71 walks in 95 total games.

Jung was named an All-American multiple times during his career at Texas Tech and received first-team honors from multiple outlets during the 2022 season. He was also a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award. Jung also won the Big 12 Player of the Year award during the 2021 season.

He was the third first-round draft pick in Texas Tech program history, joining his older brother Josh (who was drafted eighth overall by the Texas Rangers in 2019) and Donald Harris (who was also selected fifth overall by the Rangers in 1989).

Gerlich was named all-state three times during her basketball career at Sudan and Spearman high schools. She led Sudan to the 1987 state championship, scoring a game-high 19 points against Moulton and winning the Class 1A title. While at Spearman, she helped the team win the state cross country title in 1988 and also won a medal in the 1,600-meter run at the 1989 state track and field meet.

Gerlich will be officially inducted during the banquet on May 10, 2025, at the Hilton San Antonio Airport Hotel, which will coincide with the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Clinic.

Texas Tech football team suffers serious injury and loses season opener

Just hours before the eighth-ranked Texas Tech football team was set to open its season, the team announced that reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Year Sam Courtwright suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier in the week.

Last week, Courtwright was officially named to the USA FIFA World Cup U20 team. She spent most of 2024 in training camp, playing preseason games with the team before earning her spot. Courtwright – who became Tech’s first freshman All-American last season – will miss the tournament as well as the rest of Texas Tech’s season.

Shortly after that news and the absence of fullbacks Macy Blackburn and Kylie Bahr, the Red Raiders suffered a 4-0 loss to fourth-place Penn State on Thursday in State College, Pennsylvania.

The loss was Tech’s first regular season defeat since September 25, 2022 and ended the team’s 25-game winning streak.

Blackburn are still working on their recovery from a season-ending knee injury sustained late last year, with Bahr missing the game for an unknown reason.

The Red Raiders will make their home debut on Sunday when they host CSUN at 7 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
