Former Notre Dame star ends Caitlin Clark’s rookie season

As the great voice of the Green Bay Packers would say: “And this is your dagger!”

That’s what Connecticut Sun defenseman Marina Mabrey delivered to the Indiana Fever on Wednesday night when her three-pointer with 46.1 seconds left in Game 2 essentially decided the game. The Sun led by one point while the Fever pressed hard before Mabrey’s three-pointer nearly ended Indiana’s run.

Check out the highlight below, where Mabrey buries the three to the dismay of megastar Caitlin Clark.

Mabrey played big in the best-of-three series, scoring 27 points as a substitute in Connecticut’s Game 1 win before making the game-winning shot on Wednesday.

Mabrey was traded to the Sun from Indiana rivals Chicago Sky earlier this season, and the Sun are now moving on to the WNBA semifinals.

Mabrey played at Notre Dame from 2015 to 2019 and helped the Fighting Irish to the national championship in 2018. His run ended with the national runner-up title in 2019.

Mabrey averaged over 13 points per game during her time at Notre Dame and made a whopping 40% of her shots from beyond the three-point line. She was part of Notre Dame’s historic 2019 WNBA Draft class in which all five of its starting players were selected in the first 20 picks – the first time in league history.
