Former Memphis Grizzlies and Tigers point guard Derrick Rose retires

Former Memphis Grizzlies point guard Derrick Rose has announced his retirement from the NBA after a 16-year career.

Rose, 35, announced the decision on social media on Thursday.

“Knowing that I gave everything to the game, I’m confident in my decision,” Rose told ESPN. “Basketball was just the beginning for me. Now it’s important that I give everything for my family – they deserve it.”

Rose signed with the Grizzlies in 2023 and insisted he would join Memphis to play, despite many questions about whether he could potentially mentor star point guard Ja Morant. He played 16.6 minutes per game but was limited to 24 appearances due to persistent injuries.

Rose had stated in April that he wanted to return for another season, but earlier this week Memphis granted Rose’s request to release him from the final year of his contract.

Rose appeared in three NBA All-Star games and was named the league’s youngest MVP in 2011. He played seven seasons with the Chicago Bulls, four with the New York Knicks, two with the Minnesota Timberwolves, and one season each with the Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers. Rose finished his career in Memphis, where he also became a star as a rookie with the Tigers and was selected No. 1 overall in the 2008 NBA Draft.

Rose was named Rookie of the Year with the Bulls in 2009 and went on to make three consecutive All-Star appearances. However, knee injuries took their toll on the ultra-athletic point guard. He missed the entire 2012-13 season due to an ACL injury and played in just 10 games the following season. He spent two more seasons in Chicago before joining the Knicks.

Although he was never an All-Star again, Rose reshaped his game by relying on his agility to get him into the zone for floaters and developing a more consistent jump shot. From 2019-21, Rose finished among the top six NBA players named Sixth Man of the Year for three consecutive seasons.

With Rose’s NBA career now over, he will likely remain in Memphis. He bought his first home in the Bluff City and has appreciated the opportunity to raise his children in Memphis. Rose’s oldest son, PJ, played basketball for Morant’s Twelve Time AAU team this summer.
