Former Man Utd midfielder Gomes in hospital after head injury

Angel Gomes in action for Lille

Lille midfielder Angel Gomes has been hospitalized after suffering a serious head injury during the Ligue 1 match against Reims.

The London-born former Manchester United player collided with Reims defender Amadou Kone in the 11th minute of the game, who was subsequently sent off for the foul.

Players from Lille and Reims immediately called the medical staff, while their teammates placed the injured Gomes in the recovery position and formed a circle around him.

Both fan groups at the Stade Auguste-Delaune sang Gomes’ name as he paid his last respects.

The game was stopped for a long time while the 23-year-old was treated before being strapped onto a stretcher and carried off the field.

Lille said in a statement on its X account that Gomes “has regained consciousness and has been taken to hospital.”

Play resumed in the 45th minute after the first half had been extended by 34 minutes.

Gomes joined United in 2006 at the age of six and rose through the academy to the first team.

He made his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace in May 2017 and has since appeared in nine other competitions.

Gomes joined Lille in August 2020 after being released by United.

Between 2021 and 2023, he played 18 international matches for the England U21 national team.
