Former mafia killer convicted of murdering Boston gang boss

A former mafia hitman was sentenced in prison for the killing of crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger.

Fotios “Freddy” Geas appeared in court on Friday after reaching an agreement with prosecutors to change his plea to guilty to his role in Bulger’s murder.

According to the Associated Press, Geas was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder. He is already serving a life sentence for his role in several other violent crimes.

Bulger, 89, was killed in 2018 after arriving at the U.S. prison in Hazelton, West Virginia.

The Irish gangster, who held high positions in the Boston Mafia in the 1970s and 1980s, was presumably convicted of murder while working as an FBI informant against a rival gang. The crime boss has always denied working with the federal agency.

Bulger was serving two life sentences after being convicted of numerous crimes, including the killing of 11 people, in 2013.

Prosecutors allege Geas beat Bulger to death with a metal lock attached to a belt just hours after the crime boss arrived in West Virginia following his transfer from a Florida prison.

Geas is associated with the Genovese crime family of New York City, but is not an “initiated member” – probably because he has no Italian ancestry.

Another mobster linked to the murder, Paul DeCologero, pleaded guilty to assault last year and was sentenced to four years in prison – a light sentence compared to the life sentence he is already serving for the attempted murder of a teenage girl.

A third person linked to Bulger’s death, Sean McKinnon, pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents after prosecutors alleged he was serving as a guard during the murder.

McKinnon had already served 22 months in prison following his indictment and was not sentenced to another term of imprisonment. He was returned to Florida to continue his supervised release.

Bulger’s family had previously sued the FBI for alleged negligence because they had placed the targeted crime boss in a regular prison rather than in a safer location.

The lawsuit was ultimately dismissed by a judge in January 2022.
