CLEMSON — Former Clemson receiver Diondre Overton has died. He was 26.

The Clemson football program confirmed the news in a post on Twitter on September 7, but the exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed.

Overton’s career spanned from 2016 to 2019 and saw him be a member of the Tigers’ national championship teams in 2016 and 2018.

“Clemson football and the entire Clemson family mourns the passing of Clemson alumnus Diondre Overton. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” the football program said in a post.

Overton, a Greensboro native, finished his college career with 52 catches for 777 yards and seven touchdowns. After going undrafted in 2020, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound receiver made several stops in the CFL, USFL and UFL.

He most recently played the 2024 season with the Memphis Showboats of the UFL.

News of Overton’s death reached his former teammates at Clemson on the morning of September 7, and they began posting condolences on social media.

“Life ain’t fair man!!!” posted former Clemson receiver Amari Rodgers on X/formerly Twitter. “Please tell your loved ones you love them because you never know… Long live Dre.”

“I love you to death, man,” former Clemson and current Arizona Cardinals defensive end Xavier Thomas posted on Overton’s Instagram. “I’ll do anything for you, buddy. Fly high.”

Clemson is scheduled to play its first home game on September 7 against Appalachian State.
