Former boxer Amir Khan offers wedding venue in Bolton for sale

Former world boxing champion Amir Khan plans to sell his new venue in his hometown of Bolton three months after it opened.

He posted On Thursday, he said on the X platform that he wanted to “sell my wedding hall for £12.5 million”.

The Balmayna venue, which has parking for 200 vehicles and palm trees, has drawn both praise for local investment and complaints.

Critics said the 800-seat space looked out of place on Washington Street, which is surrounded by residential buildings and auto maintenance businesses.

Balmayna’s social media profile describes the four-storey space as a “luxury wedding and event venue” and its official website says it is “the brainchild of Amir Khan”.

Khan, who rose to fame by winning an Olympic silver medal at the age of 17, invested in the property along with local businessman Mohammad Jaberansari.

The building permit for the project was granted in 2013, but various setbacks led to an explosion in costs, according to the Local democracy reporting service.

Mr Jaberansari recently told a licensing committee that he had spent £6 million while Khan had “spent £10 million on this project” as they sought to improve the area and employ around 100 staff for the venue.

“These types of venues are normally expected near London, not in Bolton, but I would prefer to invest in my home town,” said Mr Jaberansari.

Khan posted about the venue’s opening in June, saying it came “after blood, sweat and tears.”

The BBC has asked his representatives for comment.
