Former Alabama prep star takes aim at reigning NFL champion

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy 28th overall in the NFL Draft on April 25, and the rookie made good progress in his debut.

In Kansas City’s 27-20 season-opening win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5, Worthy had two catches for 47 yards and a 21-yard run on an end-around. The run attempt reached the end zone, and one of Worthy’s catches also went 35 yards for a touchdown.

Worthy shot up the draft lists when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine, the fastest time ever recorded at the annual event.

The Chiefs play the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, and Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt was asked Wednesday about handling Kansas City’s newest offensive weapon.

“Speed. That’s all,” Taylor-Britt said. “He can run straight. Do jet sweeps and just run straight. He doesn’t do much else, that’s all. I think if you touch him, he only weighs a couple hundred pounds. If you touch him, it stops the speed, so you’re basically putting your hands on him.”

The former Park Crossing High School standout said the same is true for Kansas City’s other wide receivers.

“Get speed,” Taylor-Britt said. “It’s as simple as that. We’ve got speed, too. Yeah, but like I said, make sure you get your hands on those guys, man. Don’t let them go and just run past you, so we’ve got something planned for that.”

If the Chiefs perceive Taylor-Britt’s assessment as a disparagement, he doesn’t seem to care.

“I don’t like them,” Taylor-Britt said. “I don’t think I like a lot of teams. But we see them a lot. We see them a lot, and the last time it didn’t go the way we wanted. So, yeah, of course some people think about it. I don’t think about it.”

“But yeah, playing against those guys is always exciting, man. The competition, the guys on their side are good. But we have guys on our side that are just as good, so it’s a good time.”

The Bengals and Chiefs have faced each other five times in the last three seasons, including twice in the AFC Championship Game.

After Cincinnati defeated Kansas City 34-31 on the penultimate Sunday of the 2021 regular season, the Bengals defeated the Chiefs 27-24 in overtime in the AFC Championship Game four weeks later.

Cincinnati defeated Kansas City 27-24 in a 2022 regular season game, but this time the Chiefs won the rematch in the AFC Championship Game 23-20.

In 2023, Kansas City defeated Cincinnati 25-17 on the penultimate Sunday of the regular season, and the loss helped keep the Bengals out of the playoffs.

The Chiefs made it through the playoffs without Cincinnati and won the Super Bowl for the second year in a row.
