Forgotten Cameron Diaz film with 26% on Rotten Tomatoes becomes huge hit on Netflix
All sorts of strange movies are hitting Netflix, from forgotten classics to modern, under-the-radar gems… but the new smash hit is neither. The Damaged Friends was panned by critics and audiences when it was released in 2014, but it is currently the second most watched film on Netflix UK.
This film, which probably won’t appear in our list of the best Netflix movies, sits at just 26% on Rotten Tomatoes (and a slightly higher but still poor audience score of 57%). It joined the streamer’s UK catalog on Thursday, August 15, and is also available on Disney Plus, but isn’t currently streaming anywhere for US viewers and is only available on demand.
The Damaged Friends In “The Movie,” Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton play three different women who all discover they are dating the same man, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. They slowly develop a friendship while hatching a plan to get revenge on the man and eventually convict him of some crimes.
Viewers on Rotten Tomatoes call The Damaged Friends “the worst film I’ve ever seen” and “unbearable,” with critics echoing those sentiments in more polite terms. While it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, it did win Cameron Diaz the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress. So why is it the second most-watched film on Netflix?
This performance of the film is particularly impressive considering that it beats recent Netflix originals such as The murder of Air McNairand well-known films that have recently dominated the streamer’s list of most-watched films, such as Kingsmen: The Secret Service And US Marshalls.
In fact, the only film that The Damaged Friends Currently on the list of most watched films on Netflix UK is The Unionan action comedy in the original streaming with Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry.
While Netflix usually has a staggering list of new additions, including its own Netflix Originals and third-party films, that hasn’t been so much the case in the second half of August. The streamer hasn’t added that many new movies to its library, so Netflix subscribers may just be watching whatever they can find.
But with some thrillers on the Netflix top 10 list, maybe The Damaged Friends is a nice antidote to drama and suspense, even if it’s not the best movie of all time.
