ATHENS, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — Thick clouds of smoke covered large parts of Athens on Sunday as two major forest fires broke out near the Greek capital, forcing the evacuation of two communities. However, no injuries have been reported so far, according to local authorities.

In Varnavas in northeastern Attica, near Marathon, the birthplace of the marathon, 165 firefighters fought the flames. They were supported by 12 firefighting planes and helicopters.

In Neo Mazi, near the town of Megara in western Attica, 48 firefighters as well as four firefighting planes and helicopters were deployed to fight the fire.

Strong winds with temperatures of up to seven Beaufort levels made extinguishing efforts difficult.

According to the fire department, forest areas are particularly affected. Some houses in Neo Mazi were damaged and are still at risk.

Greek authorities advised everyone to remain vigilant as there is an increased risk of fire in several regions due to extreme temperatures.
