Football loses 2-1 on Sunday evening

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri – The Southeast Missouri women’s soccer team (0-1-0) lost to Murray State (1-1-0) by a final score of 2-1 in its second game of the season at Houck Stadium on Sunday night.

The Racers built a one-goal lead within the first 10 minutes of play. MSU’s Breece Bass dribbled into the SEMO box and scored the game’s first goal in the fifth minute.

At halftime, the Redhawks trailed Murray 1-0. SEMO outscored MSU 6-1 in shots, with none of the home team’s shots on goal.

SEMO responded with a strong second half, recording five shots on MSU goalkeeper Griselda Revolorio.

Still behind in the 84th Minute, Midfielder (senior) Elisabeth Rater fired a shot with her left foot from outside the Murray State penalty box to tie the game. The goal was the Redhawks’ first of the season and Rater’s first in 2024.

The Mequon, Wisconsin native played the entire 90 minutes of the game, with her only shot ending up in the net.

11 seconds later, Bass scored on SEMO’s net to give the Racers the lead again. Bass’ goal proved decisive and the Redhawks lost 2-1.

goalkeeper Sophia Elfrinkwho made her first start of 2024 on Sunday, was in goal the entire game, stopping two of nine MSU shots and allowing the two goals.

Alayna Jakul, Kristin AndersonAnd Emma Tucker were the other three Redhawks who played the full 90 minutes on Sunday evening.

The Redhawks scored a total of six shots on goal in the game, led by striker Cayla Körner who fired two shots, neither of which hit the target. Rater, Tucker and junior striker Navi Washington He fired the remaining four shots that night.

SEMO Soccer will face Southern Illinois again on Thursday, August 22nd in Cape Girardeau with kickoff at 6pm CT at Houck Field.
