Fonseca sheds light on Leao’s captaincy and Morata’s starting XI: “He wanted to play”

AC Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca has spoken about his decision to use Alvaro Morata despite injury doubts and to start Matteo Gabbia again from the first minute.

Milan will look to build on their dramatic late derby win over Inter and really kick-start their season when they host Lecce at the San Siro this evening, a team who have five points from their five games so far.

It’s really about ‘what a difference a derby makes’ as Milan secured a shock 2-1 win over their city rivals. Gabbia’s header in the 89th minute was a dramatic winner to secure their prestige and now the challenge is to keep the spirits up.

The head coach has decided no changes to be made to the starting lineup from the side that started the derby, with Morata passing a late fitness test to not only be called up but also retain his place in the team.

Fonseca spoke to Sky ahead of today’s game and commented on his team selection and the excellent ticket sales turnout at San Siro. His comments were forwarded by MilanNews.

There will be over 70,000 fans at San Siro…

“Our fans always bring great love here. Obviously they are more confident than us after the derby. And we want to make our fans proud.”

You have decided to create Morata…

“We want to ensure continuity. Yesterday there were doubts about Morata, today we made an assessment and spoke to the player. He wanted to play and it is an important moment to ensure continuity and stabilize the team. Today it will be a different game.”

Why is Leao the captain?

“Over time I will explain why different players can wear the captain’s armband. Today it’s Rafa’s turn, but we can have others too.”

Matteo Gabbia returns to the starting XI after his derby heroics…

“Gabbia brings leadership qualities, he is a focused, concentrated and responsible player. I think he has good timing and good decisions, even in the offensive phase. It is important to have a solid defensive line with confidence. That’s why I didn’t change anything.”
