Fond du Lac: Elderly community members targeted by telephone scam

MILWAUKEE — Be careful who you send your money to and why! Authorities in Fond du Lac County are warning of several phone scams targeting older community members for their money.

According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, one of the most widespread scams in which elderly community members have received fraudulent calls from people demanding that they pay false taxes on their winnings payouts.

Typically, the scammers demand cash, money orders or gift cards as payment, making them difficult to track. Some scammers have asked their victims to leave money in their mailboxes for delivery, authorities said.

Another common scam involves criminals posing as police officers or sheriff’s deputies and demanding bail money or issuing false arrest warrants for a victim’s family member.

“If you feel you are being contacted by a scammer, we recommend that you do not initially provide them with any personal information. Please contact a trusted friend or family member, your local bank, or the police to discuss the details of the possible scam,” the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook. “You can then block the scammer’s phone number at any time to prevent further contact from that specific number.”

If you or a loved one has been a victim of any of these crimes, please report it to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office at 920-929-3390.
