Follow us: Jayhawks lead 21-17 against WVU in fourth quarter; game suspended due to weather

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia and Kansas both look to put the disappointment of 1-2 records in non-league games behind them when the teams meet at noon at Milan Puskar Stadium.

The Mountaineers have won 10 of 12 meetings with KU, with the Jayhawks winning the last one with their only victory in Morgantown in seven tries in 2022.

Kansas has struggled to lose the ball, committing eight turnovers in its first three games — more than all but three of the other 133 FBS teams. The Mountaineers have struggled to force turnovers. The only turnover forced in three games was the first-quarter fumble recovery in the season-opening loss to Penn State. Since 2002, WVU has a 100-15 record when it wins the turnover battle.

16:10 — Provided there is no more lightning, the game is expected to resume at 4:44 p.m.

3:40 p.m. — The delay continues due to heavy rains in the region.

2:54 p.m. — Lightning strikes are expected for about 90 minutes, so the delay should be about 2 hours.

2:45 p.m. — Play was suspended due to a weather event. A large visible streak was seen in the distance. Kansas faces a fourth-and-7 from its own 49 when play resumes.

2:40 p.m. — West Virginia fails to capitalize on its first defensive stop of the second half, and problems on offense put enormous pressure on Greene. Another punt brings the ball back to KU, which starts at its 35-yard line with 13:36 remaining.

2:33 p.m. — West Virginia’s defense holds after allowing a first down. The Mountaineers start at their 23. Today’s attendance is 52,428.

2:28 p.m. — Under pressure from JB Brown, Greene throws a deep ball intended for Ray short, and Mello Dotson intercepts the ball, allowing Kansas to take the lead at the 23-yard line and extend its lead.

2:22 p.m. — Kansas has the lead for the first time. The Jayhawks scored two touchdowns in as many drives in the second half and took the lead for the first time today thanks to a 9-yard touchdown run by Daniel Hishaw. Hishaw also had a 32-yard run in the series and Daniels gained 21 yards on an initially failed play. Kansas 21, West Virginia 17, 4:30 3rd quarter

2:12 p.m. — The Mountaineers regained the lead with a 40-yard field goal by Michael Hayes, which was set up by a 52-yard pass from Greene to Traylon Ray. The next three plays only yielded 1 yard, forcing Hayes to be substituted. West Virginia 17, Kansas 14, 7:03 3rd quarter

14:05 — The Jayhawks march 75 yards in 10 plays and tie the score thanks to a 7-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Luke Grimm. Kansas 14, West Virginia 14, 9:08 3rd quarter

13:40 — Kansas takes a knee and goes into halftime trailing by seven points. WVU has 224 yards in the first half to Kansas’ 160. Clement has five catches for 123 yards and was responsible for all but 33 of Greene’s total passing yards.

13:35 — West Virginia regained the lead late in the half thanks to Greene’s 5-yard touchdown run. For the second consecutive game, the Mountaineers were denied a touchdown by a holding penalty. This time, Brandon Yates had to negate Greene’s 19-yard touchdown run. WVU was able to overcome that this time. West Virginia 14, Kansas 7, 0:25 2nd quarter

13:25 — The Mountaineers force a punt and Gallagher returns the ball 16 yards, putting the Mountaineers at the KU 34-yard line with 2 minutes left in the first half.

13:15 — West Virginia safety Aubrey Burks was taken away on a stretcher after play was briefly stopped while he received medical attention on the sideline. WVU punts from the other side of midfield, and on that play Crandall is injured when he collides with a teammate who is bringing the ball down at the Jayhawks’ 4. Kansas starts there with 4:21 left before halftime.

12:57 pm — KU tied Devin Neal’s 11-yard touchdown run after what was originally ruled an incomplete pass was converted into a 14-yard toss from Daniels to Quentin Skinner, who made a high-profile catch down the sideline on third-and-13 to extend the streak. Trotter has returned, but cornerback Garnett Hollis is now out with an injury. Kansas 7, West Virginia 7, 7:31 2nd quarter

12:45 pm — Linebacker Josiah Trotter is injured and has to leave the game.

12:40 pm — Greene is intercepted for the third time in two games, this time by Kansas cornerback Cobee Bryant on a pass intended for Traylon Ray. The pass came on second-and-13, one play after Greene had to leave the game briefly when his helmet came off on a 7-yard run on fourth-and-5. Nicco Marchiol lost the ball on his only snap as quarterback and recovered it for a 3-yard loss. The Jayhawks start at their 17 with 13:47 left in the first half.

12:32 pm — West Virginia’s first interception of the season comes from Tyrin Bradley, who returns Jalon Daniels’ seventh pick of the season 16 yards to the Mountaineers’ 43. WVU will start there late in the opening quarter.

12:22 pm — Consecutive passes from Garrett Greene to Hudson Clement of 38 and 39 yards lead to a 1-yard touchdown run by Jahiem White and WVU strikes first. West Virginia 7, Kansas 0, 5:16 1st quarter

12:17 pm — Kansas also gets two first downs before Mountaineer defensive lineman TJ Jackson continues his strong first month, getting a sack on third down that leads to a punt. Jacolby Spells and TJ Crandall were starting cornerbacks. Rodney Gallagher III was punt returner but failed to catch a punt by Damon Greaves that bounced 15 yards and led to a 56-yard kick. WVU takes over on its 22nd.

12:08 pm — The Mountaineers get two first downs on the opening series before a sack stalls them and leads to a punt. WVU wide receiver Preston Fox is dressed but did not play in the opening sequence. Kansas takes over on its 8th down.

12:00 pm — Kansas wins the coin toss and elects to defer to the second half. WVU receives the opening kickoff for the fourth time in as many games.
