Florida’s sales tax-free period during hurricane season begins

Saturday was the first day you could buy all hurricane supplies tax-free. Managers at ACE Hardware in Daytona Beach said they’ve noticed demand from their customers.

“We are monitoring what orders we need and as we see, we are getting more feedback from customers saying they want these items more, so we will be adding more and more items to our range,” says shop owner Hans Shah.

From August 24 to September 6, the state has suspended sales taxes on a number of products people need to prepare for the summer’s potential storms. Shoppers like Corine Hall know it’s time to prepare. “Be prepared, be alert and be safe!”

The state implemented the hurricane season exemption in 2014. Shopper Nancy Abate said she’s prepared for any hurricanes that might come her way this year. “We’re ready to go with sandbags, stockpiled extra items, lots of water, just making sure we have… tarps, tarps are big.”

This is your chance to stock up on hurricane supplies tax-free. This includes things like flashlights, tarps, and batteries. Generators are also among the tax-free items as long as they cost under $3,000.

Whether you plan to stay or evacuate when the storm arrives, FEMA recommends that everyone carry flashlights, a battery-powered radio, a two-week supply of all needed medications, cash, a first aid kit, and a week’s worth of food and water.

“We are in the peak weeks for hurricanes. They are just around the corner,” said Kevin Guthrie, executive director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. “With the potential for tropical cyclones to develop over the next four, six or even eight weeks, I want to remind everyone to stay alert and prepare.”
