Florida woman pleads guilty to tax fraud; spent $500,000 on car, plastic surgery, home renovation: Justice Department

A South Florida woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to filing false tax returns and spending nearly $500,000 on cosmetic surgery, a car and home improvements.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) said that between 2018 and 2020, operating room technician Yolanda Dewar set up a trust and requested fraudulent refunds from the IRS.

Dewar filed four false tax returns in the name of the trust she created to claim nearly $2 million in back taxes, but received only $500,000, according to court documents.

The IRS had previously indicated that Dewar’s statements were suspect, but Dewar continued, according to the Justice Department.

The indictment says Dewar used some of the half-million dollars to buy a car for a family member, undergo plastic surgery and renovate her home in Sunrise.

Dewar was arrested on April 12 and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 24. She faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison, probation, restitution and fines.
